According to Beston (2004, p. 28), "composition is clearly defined as a creative behaviour incorporating critical appraisal, experimentation with different technologies, analysis, improvisation, invention, discipline and thoroughness." Here I explain the process of my composition and how experimenting with such technology is an important component to composition.

Just to clarify what my composition is all about and how it came to be:

  • Based on the model - Michael Jackson's Bad

  • repetitive bass line, drum riffs, syncopation, lyrics, groove feel (even though speed is a little slower).

  • Lyrics here are aimed at not only adapting to the subject matter and connecting with the model song, but to bring out that awareness in society - imagine what the world would look like if only there was peace. But "where do wars and fights come from?" (James 4:1)

  • People are bullied, hurt, devastated, frustrated, upset, and annoyed by other people's actions. Others who think they have every right to hate, interfere, be in control, make such judgements and criticisms at others without a cause, whether at them intentionally or behind their backs, I think it is about time for them to rethink the way they treat, behave and deal. It's not about changing their personality, but to give them that chance to reflect about what it is they've caused to a lot of people.

  • Everyone has a right to be defensive and express themselves to those who misunderstand them. This song is not meant to be rebellious or show negative attitude towards a specific person, towards the lack of love and positive attitude that is present in society in general.

Composition Process - It has been such a positive experience for me to be exposed to technology for the purpose of this assignment. Humberstone did a magnificent job in showing me how to record on Logic Pro and actually gave me that chance to experiment with it, as Gabby was recording her parts (Bass Guitar, beat-boxing, hand claps and chorus).

Even though Logic Pro isn't my thing and I am not used to it, I feel very happy that I've learnt new things, and realised that "export" is referred to as "bounce." Don't really understand why, but anyways... thanks James for helping me with the whole recording process and final production of the song. There's a lot I look forward to learning more about in Logic Pro especially with compressing, panning, reverb quality, output volume, delay, and all other effects. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the learning outcomes of this task, and I have enjoyed every experience whether easy or tough that I encountered while composing.

My score is now finalized. Feel free to follow on with the score while listening to "I am who I am" via SoundCloud.
