What a way to conclude our class for this semester - James concludes by breaking technology. Lol :) Today we wrap up the class going over what we've covered up till this stage.
If we review the research, key to teaching with technology is not that technology is a barrier itself, but the general fear that everything will be lost or there could be technical difficulties.
Trigwell (2013) states that "All children know to deep learning. They learn surface when we bring in assessment."
Children exploring the physical world that they live in.
Anna Craft (2012) identifies the arising contrasting extreme world views of this transformation: 'Childhood at risk' vs. 'Childhood empowered'
As educators, our job is to keep a balance between both these views.
Christakis - put in line with Anna Craft's view of 'Childhood at Risk'
Grandmother approach (in line with Anna Craft's view of 'Childhood empowered') - always encourage students and gives them the resilience they need. We need to give some form of praise: "That's great - I could never do that when I was your age" and promote a SOLE (Self-Organised Learning Environment).
We have been reading Ron Berger - An Ethic of Excellence: Building a Culture of Craftsmanship with Students.
We should now read (during summer holidays) Ken Robinson & Lay Aronica - Creative Schools: The Grassroots Revolution That's Transforming Education.
Fantastic powerful anecdotes
GTD (Get Things Done) Theory - The Art of Procrastination by John Perry
Always ask what is it? Is it actionable?
If no:
Eliminate - trash, recycle
Incubate - someday/maybe lists and folders
Reference - paper / digital files and folders
If yes:
What's the next action?
Do it - if less than 2 minutes
Delegate it - then track it in "waiting for"
Defer it - next action lists, calendar, tickler file.
Human beings cannot multi-task.
As educators, in a school, we are so antithetical to PE teachers.
Antisthenes = founder of cynic philosophy.
Being an enthusiastic cynic is the answer.
Key tip to walk away with:
Float up your philosophy as an educator.
