Really pumped for this class... Mix-up. Mash-up. Learning about how online culture is changing how children conceive and interact with music.
Lecture
Stephen Heppell (one of the most influential academics in the field of technology and education globally - taught us about BaB = Bring a Browser).
Students have a sense of entitlement that is born on their experiences.
Emphasises that students are not supposed to be turning off their technological devices.
Schools have appropriated technology for themselves - making sure students carry the right phone / laptop / device.
Create a great learning environment for students - technology will come later.
Don't go back to 'kill and drill' and desegregation
We are in a world of immersion
Adopting an enthusiastic but critical approach to technology.
So many debates arise around the area of:
Whether homework is good for primary students
Whether violent games online can actually empower players to be violent.
The best way we learn music is that "we make it then we make it up" (performance then composition).
What does remix and mash up mean?

The Grey Album
mashup album released in 2004 by Danger Mouse.

Now, the fun part. Hands-on experience with Launchpad on iPads. Just a small glimpse to what a DJ actually does... Experimenting with a Launchpad today :) Check out the following link: https://twitter.com/lillianekamel/status/789426566795108356

We had a look at Madeon's Mini Mix Live:
Knowledge is no longer something exclusively handed from teacher to student, or held in libraries, but something any student with an internet-connected device can access. Informal learning of music goes on in bedrooms and via mediums such as YouTube in every hour of every day, often callobratively and almost always assisted by technology.
Electronic Composer's Process - with Frank Xavier
Developing an idea after programming loops
Being more creative by being exposed to other instruments. It's about making mistakes - trial and error.
Relies on MIDI.
A lot of good tracks are made out of mistakes.
Classical Composer's Process - with Prof. Matthew Hindson
Started writing music that was much more clear, which had much more ideas that people can relate to (which was much more engaging).
There's great merit in experimenting.
Having the parameters of the composed piece lined up as much as possible.
Start with an idea, try and develop to an instrument, transferring to another, adding accompaniment.
Use more of a modular approach - where things are much organised.
Computers are fantastic tools for developing ideas, but shouldn't be relied on to explain or show how loud or soft instruments should play.
Now moving on to Rebecca Ly... about digital based learning and gamification - playing music computer games for teaching and learning ability.
Digital game-based learning in music education
Game Caterogies
Gamification
For those who teach privately, there is an app called 'Practicia' - login like LMS. You can assign your student a particular challenge and they can tick them off.
Serious Games - games made for non-entertainment purposes.
Flashnote Derby
Staff Wars
Entertainment games
Guitar Hero
Tap Tap revenge
Does Digital-game based learning work?
Yes provided that 'FUN' comes first.
